Five Reasons to Visit an Artist Open Studio This Summer

Fresh New Work

For lots of artists the Summer Open Studio season will be the first time they’ve had a chance to exhibit since the start of the pandemic. The time and space afforded by lockdown has enabled them to build up new works and collections, and perhaps experiment with new ideas. Get along to open studios for the first chance to get your hands on some exciting new pieces.

Support Small Business

Open Studios present the chance to meet the artists and buy directly from them. Every purchase even if it’s just a card* goes a long way to encouraging and supporting a real persons dreams & ambitions. If you can’t buy something small at every visit you can still support them by taking details of their website or social media and helping to spread the word about their Open Studio.

See Behind The Scenes

Ever wondered how a particular effect is achieved in painting? Don’t understand the difference between a collagraph and an etching? Want to know how long it takes to make a piece of jewellery? Open Studios provide the chance to see first hand how an artist works, what processes and materials they use, and ask questions. You’ll gain a new appreciation for handmade and learn a few facts along the way.

Get The Best Prices

If artists are selling their work directly they don’t need to pay commission to a gallery or retailer. Some may offer lower prices as a result, others may stick to a standard pricing structure for consistency, but at least you’ll know that your money is going straight to them. You may be able to negotiate a little on prices but be careful to respect the time and skill that goes into making something handmade.

Find Unique Items with Meaning

There is nothing like taking home a painting or a handmade object that tells a story. Its story could be about the materials it’s made from, the person who made it, or the day you fell in love with it. Every time you look at or use it, it will make you smile. Handmade objects include personal touches that make them worth spending the extra time and money to find. Buy less, but buy better.
