Emma Baker Handwoven Textiles

Textiles

Emma is a textile designer and handweaver. She creates unique and luxury handwoven shawls, scarves, cowls and other accessories. She weaves on a large 8 shaft floor loom and smaller rigid heddle looms using predominantly natural resources. Her woven fabric is most often produced using merino lambswool or fine cotton but some fabric is woven using yarn which she has hand processed and spun, from local sheep and alpaca fleeces.

A favourite design that Emma weaves is deflected doubleweave, where coloured yarns are interchanged between the two sides of the weave to give a reversible weave pattern with a striking colour block appearance.

Emma weaves collections of woven accessories with each collection being unique in colour or design. Her aim is simply to produce a wearable piece of art which will become a treasured and well-worn accessory.

About The Artist

Emma has been interested in textiles for many years and the purchase of a second-hand spinning wheel some years ago, set her on the fabulous journey of spinning and then weaving. Weaving is a traditional craft and is often termed a slow textile, as the methodical process of warping the loom in preparation for weaving can alone take many hours. The delight in there being endless possible weave structures, the interesting interplay of colours on the loom and her surroundings close to the New Forest, is what inspires Emma to create and develop her work.

As a teacher of over 20 years Emma enjoys teaching others. She has taught a number of people to weave. She enjoys learning alongside others and is predominantly self-taught. Recently she has begun to run rigid heddle loom weaving workshops and classes using smaller bookmark weaving looms.
