Gill Drew aims to create a visual story using acrylic paint and mixed media, to find a connection to a memory often with a figure or sense of place. Discovering wild spaces close to her home she works from drawings and photographs seeking to weave intimacy, a feeling of nostalgia or familiarity, that connects on an emotional level through colour and shape. Layering and glazing create depth and vitality to the surface.
Giclee prints are made from selected artworks and can be printed to order. Commissions are undertaken for bespoke individual paintings.
In 2020 Gill was the judges’ choice overall winner at The Gosport Open Art Exhibition and runner up in The Art Care Salisbury Exhibition.
In October 2021 her work was selected by a panel of judges including Alixe Bovey and David Beckham, for exhibition and live auction at 22 Bishopsgate, London, in support of mental health charities.
About The Artist
Gill works from her studio in Southampton. She graduated from Loughborough with a BA(Hons) degree in textiles/embroidery and then trained as an art teacher sharing her passion for drawing and the creative process. Her degree in constructed textiles is evident in her process, switching from building a piece in fibres to traditional drawing media.
Gill has exhibited in Hampshire and London. Using cradled wood panels and canvases, her process begins freely, laying down colours and textures on to which the composition develops. Each piece evolves as she explores the subject matter and enjoys the discoveries. Paint and mixed media are layered, sanded, scratched into and glazed creating depth and vitality to the surface. This process allows both spontaneity and control as the composition develops and reveals up-close treats and surprises before a final protective varnish is applied.
