Printmaking
Hilary is a printmaker specialising in linocut prints. Her work is a combination of monochrome, multiblock and limited-edition prints, some of which find new life as digitally reproduced greeting cards. Her inspiration comes from the exploration of nature, animals and local scenes of the North Wessex Downs and Whitchurch, where she lives. Hilary loves to go out sketching and taking photos which form the basis of her designs that she continues to work on back in my studio.
She finds the process of lino carving very therapeutic and the hand-pull of each new design very rewarding. She uses traditional linocut tools, specialist paper and oil-based relief inks and hand print each piece of work using her lever press or glass barren.
About the Artist
Hilary’s background is in natural history illustration which she studied at Bournemouth & Poole College of art in the mid 90’s. While subsequent years saw her navigating the world of graphic design and marketing to establish financial stability, her passion for drawing remained a constant. In her early 50s, seeking a new challenge, she discovered the world of printmaking which led her to completing a foundation course at Red Hot Press in Southampton in 2019 – this was the start of a pivotal point in her life which has resulted in her becoming a full-time printmaker.
Being based in the beautiful town of Whitchurch, surrounded by countryside, has given Hilary a longing to focus more on landscapes as she feels drawn to rolling downs and the colours of the ever-changing seasons.
