Meet The Maker – Tibor Eperjessy

What personal touches do you like to include in your work?

Colour is an important part of my style. Recently I’ve been experimenting with different colours, and I want to do more colour combinations in my work.

Do you have music on when you’re working? What are you listening to?

I am more active in the morning and I can work for hours in silence. In the afternoons I might have some music on in the workshop but it has to be gentle.

What do you do to relax?

Grab my guitar, do some watercolour painting, drawing, reading. Oh yes and gardening.

Tibor Eperjessy is an artisan leather craftsman with 30 years experience. He is based in The New Forest.

Hi Tibor, What attracted you to working with leather?

I was first inspired by visiting an exhibition of some traditional leathercrafts. I decided it is something I want to know more about and wanted to try it.

Do you have a favourite part of the job?
I love the whole process, but especially one-off projects when I can constantly have the freedom of different choices. I compare it to music improvisation.

What are you currently working on?

I’ve just finished exhibiting at Dorset Arts Festival which kept me very busy! At the moment I’m making a lot of belts and have just sourced some lovely new colours for them.

What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t a maker?

Don’t know why but I am pretty sure I would be doing something with music.
