Jane McNeill Ceramics

Ceramics

Jane McNeill is a ceramic artist based in South Wiltshire, creating hand-thrown functional pottery from her garden studio. Working primarily on the wheel, she uses stoneware clay to make simple, balanced forms designed for everyday use. Jane draws inspiration from coastal landscapes and has a preference for calm, understated design, with influences from Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics. Her colour palette reflects this connection to place using soft, sea greens, blues, whites and natural tones, alongside gently textured surfaces and carefully developed glazes. Each piece is individually made, embracing the subtle variations that come from the making process. Jane’s work includes tableware and small vessels, created to be both practical and quietly beautiful, encouraging daily use and a lasting appreciation of handmade ceramics.

About The Artist

Jane had no formal art training and first discovered the joys of clay when a friend encouraged her to join an evening class in 2019, on the grounds that it was “a fun night out”! She was quickly mesmerised by the infinite creative possibilities the material holds, swiftly followed by a hunger to return to a deep seam of creativity laid down in her early childhood during times spent with her artisan weaver grandmother, who filled her grandchildren’s days with activities full of colour, creativity, and exploration of materials. Jane started her ceramics education at that evening class under the skilful and nurturing guidance of Mirka Golden-Hann, and she has developed her practice through dedicated studio work and an ongoing commitment to learning and refinement, allowing her style to evolve naturally over time. Jane’s practice is grounded in a love of making, of materials, and the satisfaction of producing well-crafted objects intended for everyday use.
