Silkstead Pottery

Ceramics

Helen works in stoneware (a smooth white and a grogged grey) and porcelain (white and black) making unique functional pieces that are designed to be used and handled. Pieces are mainly thrown on the wheel and their shape formed by gentle undulating hand movements. Glaze colours and combinations are an integral part of the finished piece and are made from raw materials in the studio. Two to four different glazes are layered in her most popular range ‘Moody Blues’ inspired by a tempestuous sea and sky. Pieces are fired at around 1220 degrees centigrade. Recent creative developments in her work and practice include imprinting the clay with objects from the garden and countryside and using inlay technique to add depth to the piece.

About The Artist

Helen’s first experience with pottery was at school many years ago. She was fascinated with the making process but did not have the opportunity to return to ceramics until many years later. Growing up in Dorset in an artistic and musical family Helen was exposed to different artistic forms. This included pottery as Richard Batterham’s studio was nearby. After living overseas for many years, Helen moved to Hampshire where she took some wheel throwing lessons locally and at West Dene. Just before lockdown in 2020 she set up her studio and with a second-hand wheel and kiln Silkstead Pottery was born. She hasn’t looked back! Helen can be found in her studio south of Winchester most days. Her preference is to make individual unique pieces. Her studio is a place of creativity and calm in a busy world.
